Oak Glen, a fruit-growing district in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, is the place named on this crate label for Top Peak apples. Crate labels like this one were printed to catch the eye of buyers stacked on produce-market shelves and in railway freight yards, so their bold colors and brand names did much of the selling. Apple growers across the West relied on these lithographed labels from about the late 1800s through the mid-1900s, and many of them now survive as small windows into how fruit was packed, branded and shipped. The label's wording and artwork also reflect the regional pride that helped Southern California's orchards compete in national markets.
