Wenatchee, in central Washington, became one of the great apple-growing centers of the American West after irrigation brought orchards to the Columbia River valley in the early 1900s. Crate labels like this one were printed to catch a buyer's eye in crowded grocery displays, and they often carried bright illustrations of fruit, landscapes, or idealized scenes of rural life. Growers' cooperatives and shipping firms used these lithographed labels to build brand recognition for their fruit in distant eastern markets, where shoppers could not see the orchards for themselves. The "Red Label" name points to the packing grade, and labels like it now serve as a record of how the apple trade marketed the Northwest to the rest of the country.
