This label sets its fruit apart by naming the Wenatchee district of central Washington rather than simply "Washington apples." Irrigation from the Columbia River and its tributaries turned the district's dry benchland into productive orchards in the early 1900s, and Wenatchee grew into one of the country's leading apple-growing areas. Growers shipped their fruit in wooden crates, and the colorful lithographed labels pasted on the ends were a main tool for building a brand and attracting buyers in distant markets. Today such labels are valued as a record of how produce was sold during that era.
