Wenatchee, in central Washington, grew into one of the country's major apple-shipping centers in the early 1900s, when irrigation from the Columbia River opened the valley to orchards. Crate labels like this one were printed to catch the eye of buyers in distant markets, often with bright lithographed fruit and brand names that promised quality. Labels such as this were pasted onto the ends of wooden shipping boxes, so most that survive show signs of handling and fading. This example, from the Wenatchee Produce Co., is a small piece of the packing trade that built the valley's economy.
