John D. Rockefeller Jr. is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portrait sittings made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s. The Bain collection holds more than 30,000 such negatives, and the agency's photographers often worked quickly, supplying images of businessmen, politicians and public figures for same-day publication. The record gives no date for this sitting, and the title comes from caption cards that the agency itself did not verify, so the exact occasion is unknown. Rockefeller, the son of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller, was known in his era for philanthropy and for his role in managing the family's wealth.
