Ida Tarbell, the muckraking journalist best known for her 1904 exposé of Standard Oil, appears here in a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, made and captioned many such portraits of public figures, and its caption cards are the main source for identifying sitters. The record gives no date, and the attribution comes from those unverified notes, so the exact year of the sitting is uncertain. Still, the plate reflects the era when Tarbell's investigative writing helped push Congress toward antitrust action.
