Samuel Gompers, the English-born cigar maker who led the American Federation of Labor for most of its first four decades, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data that Bain's staff wrote on the negatives or their cards. Bain's firm supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s until the 1920s, so the portrait likely belongs to that period, when Gompers was a familiar public figure in debates over wages, hours and union recognition.
