The particular detail here is the title's note that Sergeant Wyllyams's body was "stuck with arrows," a grim fact that the engraver had to render by hand. The image reproduces a photograph taken by Major Calhoun and Dr. Bell, which Harper's Weekly printed as a wood engraving in its July 27, 1867, issue. In the 1860s, magazines could not print photographs directly, so skilled engravers carved photographs into blocks, and this process shaped how frontier violence reached readers. The picture reflects the bitter conflicts on the Plains that year, when illustrated weeklies often presented Native American resistance to army expansion as "outrages" against soldiers and settlers.
