Few places along the Santa Fe railroad put its Native American décor on display as openly as the "Indian room" at the Hotel Escalante in Ash Fork, Arizona, shown here around 1908. Hotels along the line, many run by the Fred Harvey Company, decorated their public rooms with Native American blankets, baskets, pottery, and other objects to give travelers a sense of the Southwest. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this view, sold such scenes widely to tourists and armchair travelers of the period. The record's date and place come from an unverified caption card, so the exact year should be treated with some caution.
