A lion tamer in a ring, rendered in chromolithograph, is the particular focus here, and the print dates to around 1873, when color lithography was at the height of its popularity for mass-produced pictures. Chromolithographs like this one were built up from a separate stone for each color, which allowed printers to deliver bright, flat hues at low cost. The record credits Gibson & Co. with the copyright, and such firms sold these sheets to a broad public that encountered circus spectacle through posters, handbills, and parlor prints. Its subject, a performer working among big cats, reflects the era's fascination with the menagerie and its daring acts.
