The Gap itself is the subject here: the notch the Delaware River cuts through Kittatinny Ridge along the New Jersey and Pennsylvania border, seen from a distance so the water and the wooded slopes read as one broad landscape. The Water Gap drew painters, engravers and photographers through the 19th century, partly because the river appears to force its way through the mountains, a scene that became a stock image of American scenic travel. Views like this one were often made for tourists arriving by rail and steamboat, who came to the region for its hotels and summer air. Look at how the ridgeline frames the river and how little of the foreground is cleared, a reminder of how the landscape looked before the resort trade reshaped the shoreline.
