Downtown Davenport's West Third Street corner at Ripley Street is the setting here, where the Capitol theater shares a block with the Kahl Building. This 1933 ink drawing is an architectural record of that combined frontage, held in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. Its date falls in the early 1930s, when movie houses across the Midwest were adapting to synchronized sound and drawing crowds to large, ornamented downtown theaters. Theaters built as part of a commercial block like this one show how entertainment venues were woven into the everyday streetscape of American cities.
