The corner of West Seventh Street and St. Peter Street in St. Paul, Minnesota, is the site of a theater that opened as The Capitol and was later renamed the Paramount, the name this drawing uses. The ink drawing dates from 1934, a period when many American movie houses were remodeled to reflect the streamlined Art Deco and Moderne styles then popular. Drawings like this one were used to plan a building's layout, façade, and fittings, so they show how a theater was meant to look and function before construction or alteration began. Its subject, a motion picture house in a Midwestern city, reflects how the film industry shaped downtown architecture in the 1930s.
