Drawn in ink on paper in 1933, this sheet shows the RKO Orpheum theater and the New Mississippi Hotel together on one block at West Third and Brady streets in Davenport, Iowa. The Orpheum name came from the vaudeville circuit that RKO absorbed when the company was formed in 1928, so the theater carried a live stage-show tradition into the sound-film era. The drawing is part of the Library of Congress architecture and engineering holdings, and it shows how a movie house and a hotel were planned to share a street front in a Depression-era Midwestern city.
