State Street runs from the Wisconsin State Capitol toward the University of Wisconsin campus, and this 1933 ink drawing captures two theaters on that busy downtown stretch, the Capitol theater and the RKO Orpheum theater, near North Fairchild Street. Architectural and engineering drawings like this one were made to plan and record a building's form, so the sheet shows the layout and design work behind the houses rather than their street-level appearance. In the early 1930s, movie houses and former vaudeville venues were central to downtown entertainment, and a drawing that includes two theaters on one site offers a useful view of how those buildings were organized at the time.
