This ink drawing records the Capitol theater and RKO Orpheum theater on State Street near North Fairchild Street in Madison, Wisconsin, a building that served a downtown that was the center of the city's entertainment life. The drawing is dated 1933, a Depression-era year when theater owners often kept older movie houses running by updating and reworking them rather than building new ones. Like many buildings of its type, the theater combined film screenings with live stage shows, so its plans and elevations show both a public auditorium and the stage and backstage areas needed for performances.
