Ayrshire," the house of General J.A. Buchanan, is a country estate in Upperville, a village in Fauquier County in the Virginia Piedmont. The area is known for its rolling pastures, horse farms, and fox-hunting traditions, which drew wealthy owners to build large houses set among working land. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington firm that photographed Virginia and Washington scenes for postcards and publications in the early twentieth century. Its 8 by 6 inch glass negative reflects the large-format plate photography of that era.
