Lafayette Park, just north of the White House, is the setting here, and the equestrian statue of Andrew Jackson rises at its center with the executive mansion visible in the background. The photochrom process used to make this print was a early color technique in which a photographer's negative was transferred to a set of lithographic stones, one for each hue, and printed in layers. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many such views of American landmarks in the 1890s and early 1900s, and the scene shows how the park's monument and the presidential house were placed in close view of one another. The date of about 1898 is an estimate, since the record does not give a firm year.
