The bronze equestrian statue in Lafayette Square shows Andrew Jackson on a rearing horse, with the animal balanced on its hind legs and tail, a daring pose that sculptor Clark Mills was among the first in America to attempt. The statue was unveiled in 1853, after Jackson had been dead for more than a decade, and it stands directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House. Jackson, the seventh president, served from 1829 to 1837, and the monument's placement in the square has made it a long-standing reference point for debates about his legacy.
