Andrew Jackson's home at the Hermitage, near Nashville, Tennessee, is the setting here, and it shows the seventh president in the place he called home rather than in Washington. Jackson had built the plantation up over several decades, and by 1830 he was dealing with the fierce political fights of his first term, including the battle over the Second Bank of the United States and the removal of Native American nations from the Southeast. Pictures of Jackson at his estate were often made to present him as a plain-spoken frontiersman and farmer, a image that helped build his popular appeal. Look closely at how the grounds and the man are arranged to see that story at work.
