Clark Mills cast this bronze of Andrew Jackson with the general mounted on a rearing horse balanced on its hind legs and tail. Unveiled in Lafayette Square, across from the White House, in 1853, it was among the first large equestrian bronzes made in the United States and drew crowds for its daring pose. The dedication fell on January 8, the anniversary of Jackson's victory at New Orleans, linking the seventh president to his best-known triumph. The rearing horse, held up by hidden supports, still invites close study of its casting and balance.
