This wood engraving shows a classroom run under the Freedmen's Bureau in Richmond, Virginia, the former capital of the Confederacy, in 1866. The record names Elizabeth Crocker Bowers and Frank Pigeon among the people associated with the scene. Founded in 1865 to aid formerly enslaved people and poor refugees, the Bureau supported schools that drew many Northern teachers and Black students eager for education, which was often forbidden under slavery. The image was drawn from a sketch by James E. Taylor and published in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in November 1866, when Reconstruction was still being contested.
