From the hills of Hollywood Cemetery on the south side of the James River, this card shows Richmond spread out below, with the city's rooftops and church spires visible across the water. Hollywood, laid out in 1847, was a well-known place for visitors to walk and admire the view, and it gave photographers a high vantage point over the capital. The card is numbered 454 and dated around 1865, the months when the Confederate government abandoned Richmond and Union forces occupied it. Carte-de-visite mounts were small, inexpensive and often sold in sets, so this view was likely one of several city scenes made for public sale.
