The record names a ball team from "Wash. University" in Japan, but that title comes from unverified notes made by the Bain News Service, and the school itself is not confirmed. No date survives, so the picture has to be placed by its period. The Bain agency, based in New York, supplied photographs to newspapers from about 1900 into the 1920s. Baseball was already popular at Japanese universities by then, and American college teams made goodwill trips across the Pacific, which drew crowds and press attention. Anyone studying the image should treat the team's identity and the date of the trip as open questions.
