Yosemite Fall, seen from near Hutchings' property, is pictured here with a group of excursionists standing in the foreground, which gives the view a sense of scale against the falls. The Yosemite Valley was drawing visitors by the 1850s and 1860s, and stereoviews like this one were a popular way for people back home to experience the scenery in three dimensions. Hutchings' hotel and homestead were among the earliest tourist accommodations in the valley, so the photograph also records a small piece of the valley's early visitor life.
