Yosemite Fall, seen here from the Hutchings property, is one of the valley's best-known waterfalls, a tall cascade that drops from the rim of the valley toward the meadow floor. Stereoview cards like this one were sold in large numbers in the late 1800s, when Americans paired two nearly identical photographs and viewed them through a hand-held stereoscope to see a three-dimensional scene. Yosemite was a favorite subject, and the valley's scenery drew both tourists and photographers who helped turn it into a national symbol of natural wonder. Looking closely at the card will show how the twin images create depth in the rock walls and falling water.
