This portrait shows Ralph Adams Cram, the Boston architect who did more than almost anyone of his generation to revive Gothic design in American church and campus building. The caption card dates the print to about July 1911, though that date is unverified. Cram's partnership with Bertram Goodhue and Frank Ferguson produced major works such as St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue in New York and the Cadet Chapel at West Point, and his writing on medieval architecture helped shape the Gothic Revival in the United States. The print was made by Marceau, a Boston photographic studio, and it offers a glimpse of a designer at the height of his influence.
