William A. Clark, the Montana copper magnate who served in the U.S. Senate from 1901 to 1907, is the subject of this head-and-shoulders portrait, a format that puts all attention on his face and bearing. Clark built a fortune from copper mining in Butte and later gained notoriety for the costly 1899 Senate election bribery allegations that led to his first Senate seat being voided, before he was seated again after a second term effort. The caption card gives no date, so the portrait is best understood as one of the many formal studio images of prominent public men from his era, when such pictures circulated widely in newspapers and political circles.
