Kyra Markham's lithograph shows a flag raising on Leroy Street, a small street in New York's Greenwich Village, with a crowd gathered around the ceremony. Markham dated the work 1942, the year after the United States entered World War II, when displays of patriotism were common in neighborhoods across the country. The print is signed and titled in pencil by the artist. It belongs to the Ben and Beatrice Goldstein Foundation Collection of realist prints at the Library of Congress, which the library has used to show how American artists recorded everyday civic life during the war years.
