Lying among the trampled grass and scattered debris of July 3, 1863, the battlefield at Gettysburg was a place of aftermath rather than action, and this scene captures that quiet devastation on the last day of the battle. The fighting had ended with Pickett's Charge repulsed on the Union center, and the Confederate army began its retreat toward Virginia within a day. Visitors and researchers should note how the post-battle landscape reflected the scale of losses that would soon be counted in the thousands, a reminder that the town's fields became a burial ground and, later, a national memorial.
