The Gettysburg battlefield on July 1, 1863, is the setting for this picture, the first day of a three-day fight that drew the Army of the Potomac and the Army of Northern Virginia into a clash around the town. Fighting on that opening day began west and north of Gettysburg, when Confederate forces pushed toward the town and Union troops, including John Buford's cavalry, held them back long enough for reinforcements to reach the high ground. Battlefield scenes like this one were often sketched or photographed in the years after the war, when veterans and visitors came to trace the lines where units had fought.
