The plowing scene sets this engraving apart from the other Gettysburg views on this board: a farmer works a field where the armies fought in July 1863, with the battle nearly two decades in the past. Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ran it across two pages on June 24, 1882, part of a period when weekly picture papers regularly sent readers images of the former battlefield. By then the land had largely returned to cultivation, and the fields, fences and stone walls that once sheltered soldiers had become ordinary farm ground. The engraving shows how quickly working farms reclaimed the ground, even as veterans and visitors began to treat it as a place of memory.
