The particular thing about this item is its date: it was drawn in May 1921, more than half a century after the fighting at Gettysburg in July 1863. By then the battlefield had already begun its transformation into a memorial landscape. Veterans' organizations, state commissions and the federal government had been placing monuments and marking regimental positions for decades, and the War Department had overseen the site since 1895. A map from this period shows the ground as visitors of the early twentieth century would have wanted to find it, with the lines of battle and the positions of units laid out for tourists and former soldiers alike.
