Gettysburg National Military Park is the subject of this 1973 brochure, which pairs a park map with explanatory text for visitors touring the battlefield. Printed material like this was a standard part of the National Park Service's effort to guide people across the sprawling fields, ridges and monuments where the Union and Confederate armies fought in July 1863. The battle is often called the turning point of the Civil War, and by the 1970s the park drew large numbers of tourists each year. The map is worth studying closely, since it shows how the roads, hills and key positions such as Little Round Top and Cemetery Ridge shaped the fighting.
