Rather than a view of the battlefield itself, this piece is a printed visitor brochure that pairs a map of the grounds with explanatory text to help people find their way across the sprawling landscape. Union and Confederate armies fought at Gettysburg from July 1 to 3, 1863, and Congress established the site as a national military park in 1895. By the 1930s the National Park Service had assumed its care, and pamphlets like this one guided visitors along the tour roads past monuments, artillery positions and the ridges and fields where the fighting unfolded. The map shows how much ground the battle covered.
