The record gives only a name, "A. Reiss," and it is marked as unverified, so we cannot say with confidence who the sitter was or what the occasion was. The negative is a small glass plate, five by seven inches or smaller, the format Bain News Service used for much of its work. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York in 1899 to supply newspapers with pictures of current events and notable people, and its files, now at the Library of Congress, hold tens of thousands of such negatives from the early twentieth century. Images like this one were often captioned on cards kept with the plates, which is why the identification here rests on those original notes.
