The name on this plate, Col. H.D. Styer, comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service attached to its negatives, and the Library of Congress notes that the identification has not been independently verified. The image is a 5 x 7 inch or smaller glass negative, the format the agency relied on for fast newspaper work. Bain, a New York photo service active in the early twentieth century, supplied newspapers with portraits of officers, politicians, and public events. Its files are valuable to historians because they capture the look of that period's press photography, even when the captions are incomplete.
