Little is known about the sitter beyond the name, Rev. C.L. Slattery, which the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards and which the Library of Congress lists as unverified. The picture is a small glass negative, five by seven inches or smaller, of the kind the New York agency produced for newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Portraits of clergy were routine news material, sent out with captions so editors could pair a face with a story. Because its date and identification remain uncertain, the picture also shows how much such images depend on the labels that came with them.
