Cyrus H.K. Curtis is the sitter in this glass negative, a portrait made for the Bain News Service, the Manhattan photo agency whose files now form the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Curtis (1850-1933) was a Philadelphia publisher who built the Curtis Publishing Company around the Saturday Evening Post and the Ladies' Home Journal, and he was among the most influential magazine men of his era. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency recorded on its negatives, which was not always verified, so the exact sitting is uncertain. Bain's glass plates are valued for capturing the faces of prominent Americans in the early twentieth century.
