The caption identifies the subject as Astrid of Belgium, the Swedish-born princess who became Belgian consort in 1926 when she married Crown Prince Leopold, later Leopold III. She became queen in 1934 after the death of King Albert I and was killed in a car accident in Switzerland in 1935. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of a New York news photo service that supplied press pictures of public figures in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the identification rests on caption data that has not been verified.
