Little is recorded about the sitter beyond the name Prof. Gustav Herz, which comes from caption cards and negative notes that the Library of Congress describes as unverified. That uncertainty is worth keeping in mind. The portrait belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures of public figures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its small glass negative reflects the working methods of that era, when glass plates were still a common way to make news and portrait photographs.
