Identified on its caption card as Prof. Richard Zsigmondy, the German chemist who won the 1925 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for showing that colloid solutions are heterogeneous mixtures. His work on colloids, including the ultramicroscope he developed with Henry Siedentopf, made it possible to study tiny particles in liquids and helped lay groundwork for later research in nanoscience. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures, and its title is recorded as unverified, so the sitter's identity rests on the original caption.
