The aeroplane here is an S.V.A., the Italian reconnaissance biplane built by the Savoia-Pomilio company and flown by the Italian air service in the First World War. Its fame rests largely on Gabriele D'Annunzio's 1918 flight over Vienna, when the aircraft was used to drop leaflets over the city. The record names the sitter only as Lt. W.R. Taylor and gives no date, and the title comes from unverified Bain News Service data, so the identification cannot be confirmed. Bain's New York agency sold photographs like this one to newspapers during and after the war, which makes the picture a useful record of how such machines were shown to the public.
