Pakenham's death on the field is the detail that stands out in this color lithograph of the Battle of New Orleans, which shows the British general and Andrew Jackson's American forces. The battle took place on January 8, 1815, when British troops attacked Jackson's earthwork defenses south of the city. The fighting came after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed in December 1814, but news of the peace had not yet reached the Gulf Coast. Printed around 1890 by Kurz & Allison, the Chicago firm known for its colorful patriotic and historical scenes, the picture reflects how Americans of the late nineteenth century remembered the battle as a national triumph.
