The Battle of Lake Erie, fought on September 10, 1813, was the decisive naval engagement of the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes, and the title names its hero, Oliver Hazard Perry, whose squadron defeated a British fleet off the Ohio shore near Put-in-Bay. Perry's famous message after the battle, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," was written to General William Henry Harrison and became one of the war's most quoted lines. The victory cut British supply lines in the Northwest and helped open the way for Harrison's campaign into Upper Canada, which ended with the Battle of the Thames later that year.
