The Battle of Lake Erie, fought on September 10, 1813, was the decisive naval engagement of the War of 1812 on the Great Lakes, and this color halftone from about 1911 centers on the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry. Perry's squadron defeated a British fleet off Put-in-Bay, and his famous dispatch announcing the victory, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," helped make him a national hero. Because the print dates from roughly a century after the battle, it shows how Americans of the early twentieth century remembered the war, when colorized prints of historic scenes were popular. Its subject, the 1813 naval fight, gave the young United States a rare victory that secured control of the lake for the rest of the war.
