Thomas Birch's ink and wash drawing shows the moment that made Oliver Hazard Perry a national hero: his victory over the British squadron on Lake Erie on September 10, 1813. Perry's flagship and the British warships are rendered in the crisp, detailed manner of naval illustration, a style popular in the years after the War of 1812. The battle was a turning point in the western campaign, giving the United States control of the lake and helping open the way for the invasion of Upper Canada. Perry's famous dispatch, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," spread the image of the young commander widely, and prints like this one carried that story into American homes.
