Few actions of the War of 1812 have been painted as often as the duel between the frigate Constitution and HMS Guerriere, and this color halftone reproduces Rufus F. Zogbaum's version of the moment Captain Isaac Hull's ship gained the upper hand. The fight took place on August 19, 1812, off Nova Scotia, where the Constitution's heavy oak hull reportedly shrugged off British round shot, a reputation that earned the ship her nickname, Old Ironsides. The Frederick A. Stokes Company published the reproduction around 1898, and it shows how the halftone process of that decade put a painted naval scene in front of a wide public.
