In this painting, the German-settled town of New Ulm, Minnesota, is the subject, showing the 1862 attacks by Dakota warriors during the U.S.-Dakota War. Both assaults came in late summer 1862, when settlers from the town and nearby farms fought to hold their homes, and much of New Ulm was burned before the defenders pushed the attackers back. H. Aug. Schwabe's picture was reproduced as a color photomechanical print around 1902, when such prints made scenes of frontier conflict widely available. The image reflects how later generations remembered the war, so it is worth reading alongside accounts that describe the Dakota perspective and the causes of the conflict.
