Four ships, the *Pennsylvania*, the *Lockwood*, the *Saint Andrew* and the *Victoria*, are shown in distress near Liverpool during the storm of January 7 and 8, 1839, which the title calls a hurricane. The painting is by Samuel Walters, a Liverpool marine artist known for ship portraits, and the stone was drawn by T. Fairland, a London lithographer. Its imprints name publishers in Liverpool, London and New York, a sign of how closely transatlantic packet and emigrant traffic tied these wrecks to readers on both sides of the ocean. The hand coloring adds to the drama of the churning sea and sky.
